Ergonomic experts boycott conference by David Cohn Published on Monday, January 26, 2004 by the Baltimore Sun
For more than two decades, Barbara Silverstein has studied work-related injuries. Among her many subjects have been nurses, meatpackers, truckers, foundry workers, autoworkers, poultry processors and loggers.
So was she happy when the federal government decided to sponsor a two-day symposium on workplace ailments?
Quite the contrary. "It's an incredible waste," said Silverstein, an epidemiologist who works for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. I think it's a political show, not a scientific meeting. It's using science in a very cynical way.

FINAL DOCUMENT OF THE EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR THE RIGHT TO HEALTH
A year after Florence, the European Network for the right to health strongly emphasises again the need for the movement to consider health care as a social right, universal and not commercial. In Paris we have transformed a charter of intents, like the one set out at the European Forum of Salonicco, into a platform for the right against the privatisation and the destruction of the national public Health care System.

Populations are people: choices for rural health care
Julian Tudor Hart Santiago, 2003
According to conventional wisdom, in a free public service available to everyone, finite resources face infinite demands. Needs of individuals therefore conflict with needs of communities and nations. For public services to survive, we’re told that doctors must harden their hearts and make agonising choices; public services are under siege, so the people they serve must be rationed. For anything more, they have private care as a black market.

This collection of statements, reflections and papers is released for use by Peoples Health Movement members, friends and enthusiasts all over the world to initiate a celebration for the Alma Ata Declaration anniversary particularly around 6-12th September 2003. (These are the actual dates of the meeting in 1978 when the Alma Ata Declaration was passed in an International Conference on Primary Health Care organized by World Health Organization and UNICEF and other organizations and ratified by the majority of the countries of the world.). The Declaration is particularly significant to the Peoples Health Movement because the Peoples Charter for Health which evolved at the first Peoples Health Assembly at Gonoshasthya Kendra (GK) Savar in Bangladesh on 8th December 2000, endorsed the principles and practice of universal, comprehensive Primary Health Care as outlined in the Alma Ata Declaration. Celebrating the Alma Ata Anniversary is therefore a symbolic endorsement of both these consensus documents and an opportunity to express solidarity with the Health for All Now campaign of the Global Peoples Health Movement.
Dr. Ravi Narayan, Coordinator Peoples Health Movement Secretariat (Global)

IAHPE: Declarations: Stochkolm 2003 Declaration

In the final discussion at the Stockholm conference we tried to synthesise what participants had learned from the conference, with their own experience and understanding.
We produced three themes: a description of health care systems, in terms of their complexity; a critique of health system managerialism; and an agenda for change in European health care systems.
COMPLEXITY. We concluded that:
1. Health care systems are complex, because: They are embedded in society, and rooted in culture They are whole systems, not simple mechanisms They reflect economic change They are politically driven They are about social relationships
2. This complexity is: Sometimes a problem for individuals using services, although there is often a high level of public satisfaction with health services (except in the USA) A source of stability but therefore of resistance to change A management problem, that leads to managerial attempts to simplify the complexity.
3. To understand a part of a health care system you must understand the whole system.

Argentina: torture, silence, and medical teaching
BMJ 2003;326:1405
More than 30 years ago I asked my surgical instructor about petechial lesions on the scrotums of some criminals interned in the surgical ward. The shocking answer was, "Oh, yes, the police make them all go through 'the machine' before taking them to the hospital." The machine, the "picana elctrica," was a device for torturing prisoners with electric shocks, usually in the vagina, testicles, mouth, anus, or nipples. I was horrified by the fact itself but no less by the matter of fact tone in which the answer was given. As a medical student I was pretty powerless, but I went to the head of the surgical service and tried to lodge a formal complaint. I was rebuffed without any chance to make my argument heard.
