Asociación Latina para el Analisis de los Sistemas de Salud, ALASS está fundada sobre la hipótesis de que existe una cultura latina. Ésta se caracteriza en la manera de percibir la calidad de vida, los comportamientos en materias de prevención de las enfermedades, la utilización de los servicios de salud, etc... Esta cultura común recoge al mismo tiempo las peculiaridades nacionales, regionales o locales. El descubrimiento de estas características comunes facilita la comprensión de los problemas particulares de los diferentes países latinos y las soluciones que se adaptan a los sistemas de salud de estos países. ALASS promueve un acercamiento pluridisciplinar para resolver estos problemas sociosanitarios.

The Institut für Medizinische Soziologie, Klinikum der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität was founded in 1973. Its scientific work concerns itself with the analysis of the relationship of medicine and society. The social, economic and political relationships within medicine as well as the relationship between medicine and the social whole are unravelled in research and teaching. There is theoretical and empirical work in relation to historic contexts and links with society. The special and the general has to be conveyed. After all, the influence of medicine on the laws of socialisation determines its social character. In this context the accompanying critical reflection on social power relationships, social structures and political authority gains its specific meaning.

It was founded in 1951 as a result of the post-war wave of friendship spirit among international students. IFMSA affiliated to the United Nations system, and has since 1969 been recognised by the World Health Organization as the official international forum for international medical students.

It is similar to national government health departments in many countries.
